Mobile ad spend hits new high as consumers remain glued to smartphones

Many people are spending more time on their smartphones than what they did last year. This means that smartphones are showing to be more addictive and hard to get rid of as many people continue to stay using them 24/7. They were saying that we use the smartphones everyewhere we go and use it for social media alot too. For example, adults use the smartphones whilst shopping, teenagers check their phones every 5-10 minuetes of walking-with data and without data. Even without data people are still using their smartphones.

  • More than a quarter of all digital advertising is now designed for smartphones, compared to 20pc a year ago, according to the latest UK Digital Adspend report by the Internet Advertising Bureau, conducted by PwC.
  • UK now own a smartphone and most regularly use their devices on public transport, at work and while shopping. Almost half of 18 to 24-year-olds check their device within five minutes of waking, according to separate analysis by Deloitte.
  • In total, advertisers spent a record £3.98bn on digital advertising in the first half of the year, up 13pc from 2014, said PwC’s report.
  • Within this, spend on social media advertising rose to £574m and money for tablet-dedicated campaigns jumped 115pc to £68m.

I think that alot more people are using the internet alot more and using their smartphones alot more than last year. This could be because of the social media apps that they have, games, apps that they hvae. The more things you have on your phone to do, the more you will be on it. This makes it more difficult to get off it. I think that we are using it alot.

Sony to pay staff $8m over 'The Interview' hack

Sony have been made to pay $8 million to reimburse them for their losses. They have to make sure that they have to prevent having hacks again. The agreement calls for up to $10,000 a person, capped at $2.5m, to reimburse workers for identity theft losses, up to $1,000 each to cover the cost of credit-fraud protection services, capped at $2m, and up to $3.5m in legal fees.

  • Hackers calling themselves Guardians of Peace broke into Sony computers and last November released thousands of emails and documents in an attempt to derail the release of the North Korean-focused comedy The Interview
I think that they have the right to give them this as they needed the money to back up the company and making sure that it doesnt go bust and cause any problems again.

Amazon claims New York Times didn't check facts for work culture exposé

Amazon New York Times article

Amazon have said that the New York times have spoken about their work and how what they've been saying isn't rue and that they should get "facts" before they make a assumption about the Amazon company. They said that they were just focusing on one story and that were the workers. The New York times are saying that they are only saying what they saw and what they saw is true. Amazon are denying that the workers there don't like working there and that they don't do alot.

  • Bo Olson, who provided the most damning quote in the Times pieces when he said that “nearly every person I worked with, I saw cry at their desk”.
  • be critical of the company, adding: “When there are two sides of a story, a reader deserves to know them both. Why did the Times choose not to follow standard practice here? We don’t know.”
  • Carney wrote: “Had the reporters checked their facts, the story they published would have been a lot less sensational, a lot more balanced, and, let’s be honest, a lot more boring. It might not have merited the front page, but it would have been closer to the truth.”
I think that there are always two sides to a story and sometimes there isn't. I'm not sure whose telling the truth here. I feel that Amazon at not treat their employees right. But i also think that the New York times are saying most of things to make a story out of it. Having these two sides makes it difficult to know whose telling the truth.

Google launches €150m fund for publishers' digital news projects

Google has launched its €150m fund for European publishers

Google has decided to launch its fund for  European publishers to help tap a develop in the new and news digital projects.Google announced its intention to launch the innovation fund in April  that aims to support and improve historically often fractious relations with European publishers. they are trying to appeal to bug companies so that they can download it too.

  • Google has launched its €150m (£109m) fund for European publishers
  • Medium-sized projects are defined as those that require up to €300,000 in funds, of which Google will award up to 70%.
  • The Digital News Initiative was launched in April with eight European publishers. More than 120 have now signed up to try and take advantage of the fund.
  • Google said that there can be exceptions to its €1m per project funding cap if there is an idea that is collaborative, “eg: international, sector-wide, involving multiple organisations”, or if it “significantly benefits the broad news eco-system”.
I think that its good that Google have given the Europeans some access to the app so that it can help them. This will help them become more broader and have a more of a range when they are more successful than they are.

Galtung and Ruge

Galtung and Ruge (1981) defined a set of news values to explain how journalists and editors decided that certain stories and photographs were accepted as newsworthy, while others were not.

How has new and digital media technology changed Galtung and Ruge’s news values?

New and digital media hasn't changed that much  in many ways. Most news companies are just publishing there work on the apps and on their online websites. This makes the audience look at their websites rather than buy an copy of the newspapers. This is happening more often as audiences would rather get an online copy than go to the shop and get a print copy of a magazine. It depends also on what newspaper type it is, for example if its tabloid or broadsheet. Broadsheets tend to be more focused on formal stories whereas tabloids focus on soft news like celebs, gossip etc.
How would you update them for 2015?
They would be updated by the way its presented. Most stories need to be shown in different ways so that the audience can understand the different parts.

In a blog post, write how EACH news value has been affected by the growth of new and digital technology.

Immediacy: has it happened recently?
New and digital media hasn't just been happening recently, it has been happening more over the last couple of years. We have had internet for a long time and we can now use it more and quickly in past 5 years as many new technologies are coming out every year or monthly. The technology is changing rapidly.

Familiarity: is it culturally close to us in Britain?
The internet isn't just exposed in Britain. There are many stories and many ways to access it around the world. As the internet is accessed anywhere we can get stories from around the world, we can see and hear the stories and the people around the world can read the stories from Britain.

Amplitude: is it a big event or one which involves large numbers of people?
It depends on what the situation is and what story it is. This means that when the story line is big it will mainly go world wide and be important to everyone and include alot of people or affect them.

Frequency: does the event happen fairly regularly?

This also depends on the story. Technology is growing a lot more and you can access it whenever you want and however you want. This is suppose to make it easier for the customers/audience to do. This means that when they see articles or watch news they will get the information they want.

Unambiguity: is it clear and definite?
The way that technology works its descriptive and shows more than one thing. If you are searching one story alot of different ones or ones that relate to it show too.

Predictability: did we expect it to happen?
We expected technology to further but we didn't expect it to happen this quickly. This means that we didn't expect technology to change that much within a couple of years or months. This makes everyone want to keep up with the latest technology.Having this makes everyone shocked as they need to make sure that the way that they use this technology works in good ways and helps us. We can download news apps and youtube to watch news on.

Surprise: is it a rare or unexpected event?
Most of the information that we get can be a surprise but if we already know about it or heard about it then it wouldn't be. Sometimes news stories continue so that they make a story.

Continuity: has this story already been defined as news?
Most stories do carry on as they need to make sure that the story gets heard. They would normally have stories that are matching with it and connect with it, so that it builds up.Most  stories would be shown on TV, websites, youtube etc so that people can access it everywhere.

Elite nations and people: which country has the event happened in? Does the story concern well-known people?
Having this lets everyone access any story they want to. In the UK we get stories about america, Europe etc. We get informed of the stories that happen in other parts of the country that let us know what's happening. Having this is good as we get know what happening and how it could effect us if it does.

Negativity: is it bad news?
Most stories show bad news and you get to hear about it. Most stories than show different versions of it and you get to know it.

Balance: the story may be selected to balance other news, such as a human survival story to balance a number of stories concerning death.
There will always be a balance of the stories as they show the most bad ones first then mainly dies it down and show the good ones last. This is to give a balance of the different stories as not all stories can be depressing and sad, they have to have something that changes the topic completely.

"Vandals" Caught Cutting Down CCTV Camera Pole - UK

This was about a couple of people who kept committing crimes in that area and didn't want CCTV to see them commit more crimes-so they thought it was a good idea to cut down the pole where the CCTV was attached to.Whilst they were cutting it CCTV caught them. This was important as people actually do silly things like this. They rae so desparte not to get caught that they actually do.

Shocking police brutality caught on CCTV

A policeman was being aggressive towards a woman whilst she was getting arrested for something. He kept dragging her and threw her on the floor. This resulted in the policeman getting arrested and getting convicted of abuse. This is important as policemen cant treat anyone like that. Some police think because they wear a  uniform they have thr right to abuse it.

CCTV of shocking attack as man karate kicks traffic warden in Leicester

This man was talking to a traffic warden and I think they were talking about a ticket that the traffic warden did and so the man got angry and kicked him in the face. This was important as the man was wrong to kick the traffic warden. the traffic warden clearly done what he had to do as its his job and just becasue someone doesnt likeit, doesnt mean they can act like that.

Smiling female carries out knife robbery in Australia

This woman was smiling and acting friendly and decided to rob the shop. She was still smiling in the process and found it funny. They got caught in the end. This is important as people shouldnt be stealing and she was clearly being fake and pretending to be nice to get what she wanted. There was a  man involoved too and he clearly sent her to the job.

Don't Give the Finger to a Truck Driver

This driver was driving badly and needed to get past the truck. He kept beeping at him and then the driver decided to swear at the man. The truck kept bumping into the car and made sure that there was a dent in the car. They both got out and was arguing. This was bad as the the tuck driver shouldnnt have damamged the mans car, but the man should have waited to go instead of beeping.

Road rage after caught on her phone - "Do you know who I am? My UNCLE is a very famous politician"

This woman was arguing with the man in the car whose filming about the space hes in. She wanted that space and she called herself "famous" as her uncle is a politician and thought that, that made her important too. This was bad as the woman thought that just because someone in her family is a politician, she thinks hse has the right to speak to people like that.

Don't F*ck With The News Man

The news man wanted to report from a school in Manhattan, a guy kept coming in the camera and kept mucking around. He kept telling him to go and move but he kept coming back. He then got angry and was trying to beat the man up. The news reporter shouldnt have acted the way he did. He should have been more patient and just pretended thatthe man wasnt there. Eveything got recorded and it looks bad on him as hes a proffessional man.

Messing With The Wrong Old People

These boys wanted to wind up these older men by moving their golf balls away from them. They then got in trouble and the older men decided to whack the toy car and they broke it then they were arguing with the boys and then the boys were running away from them. Th kids shouldnt have a played a prank, but the older men took it too far as they are only kids and thats what some do. They need to be careful next time and the older men shouldnt have chased after them and sworn and nearly hit them.

Pool Party Turns Violent When Police Show Up and Assault and Nearly Shoot Multiple Teens

Police got called to a house party for being too noisy and they got everyone out from the party. They then made all the black Americans get out of the house and they only made them sit down and made everyone else go who wants black american. They were then trying to shoot. The police were very wrong in doing this. They shouldnt hav just left the black american people stay there, everyone should have been. They should ahve all been treated the same and with respect. He didnt have the right to sit on him etc.

Apple faces damages bill after jury finds iPhone and iPad chip violates processor patent

A man talking on his smartphone walks into an Apple store

Apple could face lose it on alo of money as they have used  technoloy which didnt belong to them and beloged to Univeristy of  wisconsin. They have had chips being in their iphone 6 and 6 plus and ipads. This means that they could be in alot of toruble and could end up giving out alot of money as the chips didnt belong to them. There will be trial on how mcuh apple owes them.

  • The jury was considering whether Apple’s A7, A8 and A8X processors, found in the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus, as well as versions of the iPad, violated the patent
  • Apple Inc could face up to $862m in damages
  • He scheduled the trial to proceed in three phases: liability, damages, and finally, whether Apple infringed the patent willfully, which could lead to enhanced penalties.
I think that Apple was wrong to use technology taht didnt belong to them even if they made more moeny by it. They shouldnt be allowed to get away with it as its soemthing that needs to be dealt with. As Apple didnt have it in all of their products then it may benefit them as the charges of momney may go down a bit. Apple may lose some customers after this but thats because they did wrong.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2015/oct/12/us-todays-facebook-emojis-twitter

USA Today's Facebook-inspired use of emojis gets thumbs down

USA Today: emojis on the front page were inspired by Facebook Reactions.

Facebook had put cartoon symbols as they needed to show whether they though stories were happy or sad. This got criticsed in many ways. They had decided to put cartoon emojis on each page of a USA newspaper to see whether they thought the stories were happy or sad. The audeience didnt like this process very much as they didnt understand the purpose and didnt find it intresting. For example, the stories which had things to do ith death had a sad face or angry face-and some of these topics are sensitive to some people. That why it sparked man problems.

  • An article about Russian bombing of Syria was illustrated with an angry red face, while a story about the stabbing of a US citizen – who had recently helped stop a terrorist attack in France – carried a sad face with a tear emerging from one eye.
  • He said: “I doubt they will become a core part of print articles, but we wanted to see what it would look like ... I think we’ll see more experimenting with digital practices in print, even if they don’t become mainstream.”
  • The stunt received a mixed reaction on Twitter, with some pointing out that it jarred with the serious nature of the stories being covered and others questioning whether emojis had a place in print.
I think that Facebook shouldnt have intorduced this new thing to print media as its soemthing that needs to stay on digital media and not print. These emojis seem weird to have on print and by having them makes people a bit confused. Also, they shouldnt have it emojis down where they thought was relelvent some stories will be sad or happy but because its their opinion it could be done wrong. Everyone has different opinions and by them doing this makes it worse in a way.

Citizen journalism

Examples

  • No longer passive recievers of the news
  • the audeince have become useres and useres have become publishers
  • Audeinces now create their own content
  • User generated content
  • divisoion between institutuion and audience
  • Digital media has made a big impact
  • UCG has a massive impact nowadays
  • audience have become users and users become publishers

theory (audience reception etc.)
  • User generated content
  • Citizen jpurnalism
  • grassroot journalist
  • Accidental journalists

benefits to institutions

This helps some institutions in some ways. For example, the institutions they can help sell the stories that are being shown or heard by people. This will give them the chance to show off what they heard and look into it more and also help the people who told the story. There are many stories that change everyday and every time. This means that whenever there is a new story the institutions have to make sure that they have a say in it too. For example, if someone tweeted something on twitter, BBC could find it and then re tweet it or at it on the news.

benefits to audience

This has a lot of benefit to the audience as they would feel that their voice is getting heard by citizen journalism. This helps young or older generation people connect with others that fear that they don't have a say but now they do as they can easily voice their opinion with a sample picture or a video when there is something for them to say or when something is happening that they think another side needs to  hear. Most audeinces who watch the news or read newspapers are only going to understand and see what they say. But now there is other views and other sides to it, it  makes people think alot.

wider issues and debates

The other issues are that some people think its bad that when there is a story about someone-there is always something wrong with it. For example, racism, inequality, unfairness etc. These are all things that have to be taken into account.

SHEP

Social- There are many social issues that happen. For example, the story could cause moral panics which means that the audiences will be distressed and annoyed etc. Sometimes it causes protests that will turn into riots and it wont be a good image.

History- There has been a  few times where the in the past this was a major problem as many people didn't know about it-this led to major concerns and riots. This would have been a problem a long time ago as racism and stereotypes were still important then and those were the people that would get attacked etc.

Economic-There were some economic problems where there could be problems when there was a riots there would be problems as they would lose out on money as it would lead to people not coming into work, or losing their jobs. This is also bad for the shops around them.

Politics- It causes problems with riots if there any.

1) What is meant by the term ‘citizen journalist’?

Citizen journalism is when a member of the public talks about and shows something that they find is important and hasn't been shown properly on the news. This is a way of people having an opinion that goes viral and is seen/shown everywhere.

2) What was one of the first examples of news being generated by ‘ordinary people’?
The first example was Rodney King how was involved in a car chase and got hit with clubs by the police in 1991. This sparked controversy as there was problems regarding as they thought it was due to things like racism that caused problems. this went viral and you can still see the video today.

3) List some of the formats for participation that are now offered by news organisations.

Some of the formats are that

4) What is one of the main differences between professionally shot footage and that taken first-hand (UGC)?

This is a proper video which is shown that inst live. This means that there is a video that can be shown and it isn't touched much. The first-hand one is shown through the video and it can be cut down or touched up as it may cause problems if its something bad.

5) What is a gatekeeper?
A gate keeper is when information is being filtered or fixed through before it gets shown on the news, social media etc.

6) How has the role of a gatekeeper changed?
The role of the gate keeper has changed a lot as you don't have to go through that process
any more in order to get something shown or published. You can tweet on twitter, put a picture up on Facebook etc. There are many ways to get people views heard.
7) What is one of the primary concerns held by journalists over the rise of UGC?
UGC  now plays a huge role in media. includes formats like message boards, chat rooms, Q+A, polls, have your says and blogs with comments enabled.

What impact is new/digital media having on the following:

news stories- This will be bad for them as they would rather watch it on the internet and see the thing rather than wait and watch it on TV.

the news agenda (the choice of stories that make up the news)- More stories are better and exciting than the ones that are on the TV. This makes the audience want to read it rather than watch older ones that aren't that important and doesn't interest them.

the role of professionals in news- This could be too formal for the audience s that are now interested in the news. This would make them want to watch the original footage.

The effect of online technology

1) Do you agree with James Murdoch that the BBC should not be allowed to provide free news online? Why?

I dont agree with James as the BBC should be able to provide free news whenever they want and however they want to.Its not bad to have a free service. As the BBC is a free service, its been around for many years and just to start costing customers it would be bad as they dont need to. If they did do this many customers wouldnt read the news online and they would lose hundereds of suctomers because of it. This makes it bad for the BBC as they would lose out on profit and viewers.

2) Was Rupert Murdoch right to put his news content (The Times, The Sun) behind a paywall?

I think that murdoch was wrong to put the news contents on a paywall. This is because when people visist a website they expect to see all the information that is tehre for them.By having a price on it, it makes it worse as the people/audience wont still be on the website, they will leave and not pay. This is because people would think that they shouldnt have to pay for anything just to see some information-it doesnt do anything else. It should be free as its a provider and it doesnt do anything else. No one is going to pay as people already pay for internet at home-they pay for wifi and to have data on their phone or other digital technology so that they can access these things.

3) Choose two comments from below the Times paywall article - one that argues in favour of the paywall and one that argues against. Copy a quote from each and explain which YOU agree with and why."All very well, but the Times has zero web presence. What's the point of existing in the 21st century without one?
I never hear or read anything from the newspaper, because nobody can share what it publishes." This is a good quote is its trying to say that the market is now being and now on the internet. everything that the news or newspapers pulish should go on their wbesites that show that they meet all the viewrs needs. This person doenst read newspapers as they are outdated and not needed, i think this is wrong, as yes the interent is growing and so shoudl the companies but that doenst mean that they still cant publish as those who dont have access to interent like elderly people will need it.

"There really is that split emerging between the new breed of online content companies who are pushing the viral, sharable side of things, and the more traditional outlook of the Times. "Practice run" sounds about right too.
But as you say, it doesn't need the volume when it is achieving average revenue per user on a monthly basis of about £12 (I guess, it's not disclosed), with 2.1k new users joining every month. The Time is losing money on each one at the moment, which is what you get for giving away a Nexus 7 and spending £loads on marketing, but that's as it should be." This tells me that this is good as they need to make sure that they have both the new and old sense of the media. Having printed media is there to attract those who still read it and then those who are using the digital media thsi si to make sure that they meet all the targeted audeiences as they need to make sure that they can attarct them still.

4) Why do you think the Evening Standard has bucked the trend and increased circulation and profit in the last two years?

I think they done this because they know taht the amount of views and useres who are reading and buying print are falling down alot. This is to help make sure that this doesnt happen as much.By doing this they think that they will read more and be more into it.

5) Is there any hope for the newspaper industry or will it eventually die out? Provide a detailed response to this question explaining and justifying your opinion.
I think that isnt much hope for the newspaper inudsty. This is because everyone does use the interent. Whether its for personal use, information, school, work, information etc they still use it. The internet has been trending ever since it came out. It has always been a big deal to veryone and now that everyone has it in their homes it lets you access whatever you want. People are becoming more lazy as they dont want to go the shop and buy a newspaper or a magazine when they can stay at home and access it at home or wherver they are. they think that they read it, it goes in the bin so whats the point? This shows that peopel dont want them as they can get it for free (more or less) whever they are and wont take up space or they wont have to go out.

It’s time the media treated Muslims fairly

More than 100 people were killed when a crane collapsed in Mecca earlier this month. Mail Online saw fit to include references to Osama bin Laden and 9/11 in the headline of its story about the disaster.

There have been some times where Muslims have been discriminated and seen as bad people. There was a heading which said “Muslim gang slashes tyres of immigration-raid van” . The Daily mail has apologised for this heading as it was something that didn't need to be said and did cause harm to many Muslim people as they are being portrayed as bad people. This was made after an attack on immigrants in east London .  The writer gave many recent and old stories of where Muslims have been attacked by a columnist. They want to make sure that this is prevented in the future.

  • Muslim community” and “Muslim youths” – even though the faith of the perpetrators was not known, nor relevant.
  • linked their deaths to Osama bin Laden and 9/11 inits headline“At least 87 people killed … after giant crane ‘operated by Bin Laden firm’ collapses … on anniversary of 9/11 attacks”
  • And what better way to get people to read an article than by linking it to the far-right narrative that Islam  is evil, and that its adherents need to be civilised to become “good Muslims”?
  • 37% of British people who were surveyed admitted they would support policies to reduce the number of Muslims in the country.
  • This “othering” of Muslims has also manifested itself in a growth in hate crime: a 70%rise in the past year according to the Metropolitan police.
I think that Muslims aren't being seen fairly in the media as they are branded as a whole. This means that when some or one person who is a Muslim does something bad, they are all portrayed as bad too. This isn't fair as they are people too and its not all of them its only some. The ones that are being bad are the ones that should get in trouble and not the other ones. They should be the ones that go to prison or admit to what they did.

Google AMP battles ad-blocking, Apple and Facebook by cutting load times

Google.

Google want to try and counter the threat from ad-blocking and rivals Facebook and Apple by radically improving the loading speed of web pages on smartphones and tablets. This means that they want to try and get rid of adverts that are happening on apps, smartphones, tablets, etc. A date hasn't been set yet on which they want to launch this.Google’s head of news and social products Richard Gingras said: “This is about making the world wide web great again ... to make sure all users can access the vibrant ecosystem of the world wide web, and get it in a near instant fashion everywhere in the world.” This means that they want to be unique and try and do more as a company.
  • The project is partly a response to the launch of Facebook Instant Articles and Apple News, both of which allow newspapers, magazines and digital media companies to publish content directly to their platforms.
  • Apple allowed third party apps to block ads in its Safari web browser last month, which is expected to massively increase the number of people deciding to block ads on iPhones and iPads.
I think that  having the ad blocker is a good thing as it wont annoy the audience as much as then they wont have to worry about it interrupting what they are doing. Having this does help as some people just want to search without having other things popping up at them. This does make them focus on what they want and making sure that they don't want to see other things that wont matter to them.

Learner response of my mock

WWW: Some attempts to answer the question.
LR: Lacks specific examples, research, quotes, theory. Re-write a paragrap incorporating some of the ideas from the powerpoint i asked you to revise. You need to focus on the specific key words which are-views/values.

Developments in new/digital media means that audiences can now have access to a gretaer variety of views and values. To what extent are audeiinces empowered by these developments?

The audience have been empowered by the internet in many ways. For example, there have been many things that as changed over the years. This means T.V channels have become more of wide choice rather than being a 4 channel T.V. The developments of how computers and internet has been used has gotten better and more unique than what it was a couple of years ago. Now that we have more access to the internet we can access magazines, newspapers and radio on our laptops, computers, phones etc. This can be done on apps like the daily mail, the sun etc. You can now access radio reports on youtube. This shows that there is more happeing around the world now and that people would rather watch repeats and have apps to access information. This is good for the audeinces as they can have an easier access to whatever they feel they want to read or watch. Around 500 years ago Guttenburg invented prinintg where the numbers of books rose to around 20 million in just 25 years. This shows that having and reading books was once something great and still is fo rmany epopel but many epoepl prefer to read and not read over the internet. This also shows that books as a whole has not been doing as well as they did a couple of years ago due to the different types of accesses we can get online. This means having text books apps on our phones, having school work being done over the interent rather than a paper and pen etc. Many people on the internt can get their opinion heard. This coild be by blogging, commenting on something that they find important. This has grown into something more than just being a jounalist or being a speaker on a news report or on somthing that had to be done. Many people can just comment whenever they want and have a view whenever they want aswell. In newspapers or magazines you get chosen or have to make a comment or a view on a story. On apps like instagram or facebook you can post a comment on what you think and like it aswell. On twitter you can tweet whatever you like and then @ the person to see if they will reply back or question your view. This shows that the media has grown in a sense to help people. This tells me that the audeiences are empowered by the changes and developments being made.

Twitter 'to unveil founder Jack Dorsey as new chief executive'

There is going to be a new manager/CEO of twitter as twitter have been falling bahind alot in there soical media. Other better social media like facebook and instagram has had more followers that have signed up to them. Twitter wanat a new fresh faced person who will be able to make twitter better than what it is now. This means by making sure that they get more followers and more tweets coming in often. Having this will help twitter become more better than  facebook or instagram. This new CEO i scalled jack dorsey who was already part of the company. He will be replacing Dick costolo who was a comedian and entrepeneur.

  • Twitter has more than 300m users, far behind the 1.5bn people hooked on Facebooks online social network.
  • Twitter's future have hit its shares, which have fallen nearly 50pc since late April. The shares rallied after Re/Code's report, gaining $1.35, or more than 5pc.
  • Jack hepled start the company in 2006 he was the CEO until 2008
  • Mr Dorsey, 38, remained Twitter's chairman and one of its largest shareholders with a 3pc stake currently worth about $600m.
I think that having a new person is a good idea as it can help have new ideas that will be better for the company. Jack Dorsey was already part of th CEO which showed that he already knows what hes doing. This means that he will know alot about it and that he can add what he needs to as he will know what makes the company good and bad.

Music streaming just became a billion-dollar industry
  • Streaming revenue as a whole surpassed $1bn in the first half of the year for the first time.
Download sales revenue fell 4pc to $1.3bn, while physical disc sales dropped 17pc to $748m.
  • The rise of digital streaming has helped the industry maintain annual revenues of around $7bn since 2010, offsetting the decline in revenue from digital downloads of single tracks that began in 2013.
  • But the level is far below the industry peak in 1999 of $14.6bn, when compact discs were dominant.
i think that its better to have music streamed as it gives the audeince more choice and they dont have to pay much if they do pay. Some apps let the music play free on their phone or tablet for a while. Otherwise peopel jsut go on youtube because that easier aswell. Its not good for the album company as when they make copies for their album not many pople buy it as they can get it on their phones and via the internet.

New and digital media

What are the key statistics relating to the influence of new and digital media?
There are many statistics that influence the new and digital media roles. For example, the majority of adults in the UK (95%) say they follow the news.75% of UK adults saying they use TV as a source of news; this figure has seen a small decrease since 2013 (78%).  Also,

  • There has been growth in the number of those who use any internet or apps for news, with over four in ten (41%) doing so this year, compared to just under a third last year (32%).
  • the 16-34 age group, where use of internet or apps for news has increased from 44% in 2013 to 60% in 2014.
  • over a quarter (28%) of those who consume news in the UK named BBC One, compared to over one-third (34%) in 2013.
  • increase in the number of people stating a website/app as their most important news source (21% in 2014 vs. 14% in 2013).
  • Almost half (45%) of 16-24s say their most important news source is a website/app, up 15 percentage points since 2013 (30%).
  • The majority of this (64%) was on BBC One or BBC Two and a
  • further 12% on the BBC News channel. However, 16-24 year olds consumed only 27 hours of news on television in the same period, compared to 196 hours for those aged 55 and over.
  • When asked which topics they considered to be news, UK adults nominated crime (53%), worldwide current affairs(53%), UK-wide current affairs (51%) and UK-wide politics (49%).
  • UK politics and current affairs, and worldwide current affairs, are seen to have societal importance by half (49%) of UK adults, crime by 48% and weather by 45%.
  • Almost three in five (58%) UK adults say they follow the news to find out “what’s going on in the world”. The next most-cited reason is to know “what’s going on across the UK” (56%), followed by to know “what’s going on in my local area” (49%), then to know “what’s going on in respective nations” (46%) and “because I feel it’s important to keep informed about certain issues” (42%).
2) Come up with an example of an institution that has benefited from the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. Explain how new technology has helped the institution and try to find statistics or financial figures that support your point.
Institution has benefited from the changes in new and digital media in many ways. They have brought a lot to the news industry. Now that there is internet its being used for many things. For example, you can watch the news on the website its comes from, or on you tube. You can read newspapers on websites and listen to the news on the radio which you could have always done. Also, you can access news headlines or stories on your phone by downloading the app from newspapers or news. For example, Daily mail app or BBC news app. These are the things that help the news industry as we know where the stories have come from. They would rather access this as its quick and easy which is why the big companies decided to upgrade and use internet rather than print.

3) Find an example of an institution that has suffered as a result of the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. In what way has it had a negative impact? Again, try and find actual statistics or financial figures to explain your point.
There have been some cases where institutions have suffered as a result of change in new and digital media. By having the internet many people would rather access that then go to the shop and pick up a newspaper or magazine. Making sure that different media is getting done when they need to is important as the need to make sure that it gets done.  This shows that the newspaper industry is going down and slowing down as kits worsening more. Having this does make an issue for some things.

4) Answer the following question in a mini-essay on your blog:

Who has benefited most from the changes new and digital media have had on the news industry - audiences or institutions?

I think that the audiences has benefited more than the institutions. This is because having to have more things to do like they can access the news articles on their phone, laptop, computer, tablets and ipads. Its portable everywhere. Also, the can access the magazines articles, watch the news on their websites or on you tube, they can read and search anything everywhere. If they just read a newspaper they would have to pay a small amount, they would have to make sure that they get the right issue, they will have to make sure that they get the issue everyday and that means going to the shops or making sure that they get delivered home. They can do this at home via the internet which is easier for them. This helps them as its more efficient and quick. Some people cant be bothered to go home and pay for a newspaper when they can get the top articles for free on an app and as they are already paying for internet they don't want to spend more money they want to makes sure that they are getting the most out of their internet usage. On the internet you can access  more than the newspapers. If someone was reading an article that they found interesting then they would try and search for me about it or find some more information. Having the internet can open up many things. On the institution side i don't think it helps them as they would be losing a profit in a way that the newspapers and the loss of viewers on T.V. This is why i think that the audiences have benefited more.
