benefits to institutions
This helps some institutions in some ways. For example, the institutions they can help sell the stories that are being shown or heard by people. This will give them the chance to show off what they heard and look into it more and also help the people who told the story. There are many stories that change everyday and every time. This means that whenever there is a new story the institutions have to make sure that they have a say in it too. For example, if someone tweeted something on twitter, BBC could find it and then re tweet it or at it on the news.
benefits to audience
This has a lot of benefit to the audience as they would feel that their voice is getting heard by citizen journalism. This helps young or older generation people connect with others that fear that they don't have a say but now they do as they can easily voice their opinion with a sample picture or a video when there is something for them to say or when something is happening that they think another side needs to hear. Most audeinces who watch the news or read newspapers are only going to understand and see what they say. But now there is other views and other sides to it, it makes people think alot.
wider issues and debates
The other issues are that some people think its bad that when there is a story about someone-there is always something wrong with it. For example, racism, inequality, unfairness etc. These are all things that have to be taken into account.
SHEP
Social- There are many social issues that happen. For example, the story could cause moral panics which means that the audiences will be distressed and annoyed etc. Sometimes it causes protests that will turn into riots and it wont be a good image.
History- There has been a few times where the in the past this was a major problem as many people didn't know about it-this led to major concerns and riots. This would have been a problem a long time ago as racism and stereotypes were still important then and those were the people that would get attacked etc.
Economic-There were some economic problems where there could be problems when there was a riots there would be problems as they would lose out on money as it would lead to people not coming into work, or losing their jobs. This is also bad for the shops around them.
Politics- It causes problems with riots if there any.
1) What is meant by the term ‘citizen journalist’?
Citizen journalism is when a member of the public talks about and shows something that they find is important and hasn't been shown properly on the news. This is a way of people having an opinion that goes viral and is seen/shown everywhere.
2) What was one of the first examples of news being generated by ‘ordinary people’?
The first example was Rodney King how was involved in a car chase and got hit with clubs by the police in 1991. This sparked controversy as there was problems regarding as they thought it was due to things like racism that caused problems. this went viral and you can still see the video today.
3) List some of the formats for participation that are now offered by news organisations.
Some of the formats are that
4) What is one of the main differences between professionally shot footage and that taken first-hand (UGC)?
This is a proper video which is shown that inst live. This means that there is a video that can be shown and it isn't touched much. The first-hand one is shown through the video and it can be cut down or touched up as it may cause problems if its something bad.
5) What is a gatekeeper?
A gate keeper is when information is being filtered or fixed through before it gets shown on the news, social media etc.
6) How has the role of a gatekeeper changed?
The role of the gate keeper has changed a lot as you don't have to go through that process
any more in order to get something shown or published. You can tweet on twitter, put a picture up on Facebook etc. There are many ways to get people views heard.7) What is one of the primary concerns held by journalists over the rise of UGC?
UGC now plays a huge role in media. includes formats like message boards, chat rooms, Q+A, polls, have your says and blogs with comments enabled.
What impact is new/digital media having on the following:
the news agenda (the choice of stories that make up the news)- More stories are better and exciting than the ones that are on the TV. This makes the audience want to read it rather than watch older ones that aren't that important and doesn't interest them.
the role of professionals in news- This could be too formal for the audience s that are now interested in the news. This would make them want to watch the original footage.
