Identities in the media

  1. How did the language and selection of images in the coverage create a particular representation of young people?
In the beginning it  how teenagers are being shown as what they are stereotypically known as which are thieves or thugs etc. The pictures do show that they are correct in a way and they can see that they are being disruptive but most teenagers arent like this.
  1. Why does David Buckingham mention Owen Jones and his work Chavs: the demonisation of the working class?

  1. What is the typical representation of young people – and teenage boys in particular? What did the 2005 IPSOS/MORI survey find?
There has always been a typical stereotype of what are thought of teenagers. THat is that they are included with crime all the time, that they dont do anything, they cant study, violence and ant-social behaviour.

How can Stanley Cohen’s work on Moral Panic be linked to the coverage of the riots?
They can be linked by the way that the way that the media portray all of the riots. For example, they would show how bad it is and what they are doing wrong and that would appeal to some people and that would annoy them.

  1. What elements of the media and popular culture were blamed for the riots?
Alot of media were blamed for the the way that it was set out etc.
  1. How was social media blamed for the riots? What was interesting about the discussion of social media when compared to the Arab Spring in 2011?
Social media was blamed by the way that the teenagers were portrays as at the end of the day they are still teens and they are young and they not have wanted to be shown in the way that they did but then they shouldn't have done anything.
  1. The riots generated a huge amount of comment and opinion - both in mainstream and social media. How can the two-step flow theory be linked to the coverage of the riots?
The two-step flow model would be included by the way that they have opinion in the way that the riots show it etc.
  1. Alternatively, how might media scholars like Henry Jenkins view the 'tsunami' of blogs, forums and social media comments? Do you agree that this shows the democratisation of the media?
In a way they were like a tsnumai of blogs as they had to make sure that there was enough days for them to blog and make sure that there was enough information written down.
  1. What were the right-wing responses to the causes of the riots?
Daily mail were stating things that would normally be associated with teenagers that go into crime and things. For example, they are unparented, they are uneducated and are brutalised youngsters.
  1. What were the left-wing responses to the causes of the riots?
Is that they were people that were left without homes and things like that and that communities should come together and do what they want to help them become a society again.
  1. What are your OWN views on the main causes of the riots?
I have different views on this and to be honest there are many things that people could think that happened which is why the riots ended up the way it did. The riots happens so that they were believing and helping and trying to make a point about what happens and that why it turned into something big.
  1. How can capitalism be blamed for the riots? What media theory (from our new/digital media unit) can this be linked to?
There are many things that be linked to this for e.g they could have done alot to make sure that there wasn't alot happening. for example, capitalism has a big impact on society and alot is said and done.
  1. Were people involved in the riots given a voice in the media to explain their participation?
People who were involved with the riots weren't given a reason to be part of the media and voice their opinion. They were made to do whatever they wanted and were ensured that when they did things and had to hold it together and not say anything as they were bad they couldn't say anything.
  1. In the Guardian website's investigation into the causes of the riots, they did interview rioters themselves. Read this Guardian article from their Reading the Riots academic research project - what causes are outlined by those involved in the disturbances?

  1. What is your own opinion on the riots? Do you have sympathy with those involved or do you believe strong prison sentences are the right approach to prevent such events happening in future?
I feel like the riots were done for a purpose and that was to make sure that there was point being made but then it got out of hand and made it worse by everyone making things worse. They have to male sure that there was something else happening and everyone just wanted to get involved and make a big problem out of it.
